Why pre-book rather than hail, drive or take the train?
Quotes for the same Kent-to-airport journey vary a great deal between firms, so it pays to ask for a fixed price in advance rather than take whatever a meter says at the end. For two or more passengers a pre-booked car often beats the train once you add the taxi to the station, the airport express fare and the early start, and it can beat airport parking on a longer trip.

How airport transfer pricing works
We do not publish fares. The only accurate price is a fixed quote for your journey from the operator who will drive it, and quotes for the same journey vary a great deal between firms. These are the things that move the number, so you can compare quotes like with like:
- Distance and time of day. Every airport and town page shows the miles and free-flow drive time. Pickups between roughly 23:00 and 06:00 often carry a night supplement; bank holidays and Christmas Day are higher still.
- Vehicle size. An estate or MPV for five or six passengers with luggage costs more than a saloon, and an eight-seater minibus more again, but split between a group a minibus often works out best per head.
- Airport drop-off charges. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton all charge cars to stop at the terminal forecourt: Heathrow £7, Gatwick £10 (from January 2026), Stansted £10 for up to 15 minutes (from March 2026) and Luton £7 at the time of writing. Some operators include it in the quote, some add it at the end. Ask.
- The Dart Charge. Any journey to Stansted, Luton or Southend crosses the Thames at Dartford. The charge is £3.50 per crossing for a car between 06:00 and 22:00 and free overnight, so a 04:00 departure avoids it on the way out.
- London tunnel charges. A London City transfer routed through the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel pays between £1.50 and £4 per crossing between 06:00 and 22:00, depending on the time (rates rise slightly from 21 September 2026). Via the Woolwich ferry there is no charge; going round via Dartford swaps it for the Dart Charge.
- Waiting time. Return pickups include a grace period after landing. Beyond it you pay per 15 minutes, plus the short-stay parking.
- Return bookings. Many operators price a return more keenly than two separate one-way bookings. Ask for both legs in one quote.

Car, train or airport parking?
For one person on a daytime flight, the train is often the cheaper option from most of Kent, particularly to Gatwick via St Pancras or to London City via Stratford. For two or more, or for any flight that means leaving before 06:00, a fixed-price car door to door is worth pricing against the train plus taxis at each end. Against airport parking, compare a return transfer quote with the parking cost for the length of your trip; the longer the trip, the better the car looks.
Questions people ask
How far in advance should I book an airport taxi from Kent?
For a long transfer to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted or Luton, 48 hours' notice is comfortable and a week is better in school holidays. Same-day bookings are often possible but expect less availability and a higher price.
Is the price fixed?
Yes. A pre-booked airport transfer from a Kent private-hire operator is quoted as a fixed price for the journey, not a metered fare. Ask whether airport drop-off charges and the Dart Charge are included.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Operators track inbound flights and adjust the pickup time. A reasonable waiting period after landing, typically 30 to 60 minutes, is included in most quotes. Waiting beyond that may be charged per 15 minutes.
Is a pre-booked car cheaper than the train?
For one person, rarely. For two or more, or for anything that means leaving before 06:00, a car is often cheaper once you add taxis at each end and the Gatwick Express or Stansted Express, and it is door to door with your luggage.
Which is the closest airport to Kent?
It depends where you are. London City is closest for Dartford, Gravesend and Medway. Gatwick is closest for Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and the Weald. For east Kent, Gatwick and London City are similar in time and Gatwick usually has the flight you want.
Who actually provides the car?
